History of Westminster Presbyterian Church

of Chehalis, Washington

In 1853 Rev. George Frederick Whitworth, a minister in the Ohio Valley, set off for the Western frontier on a mission trek. Our church was organized in 1855 in the Davis cabin on Davis Prairie by Rev. Whitworth, Father of Presbyterianism in the Northwest, along with several hardy pioneer families. Incorporated in Chehalis in 1857, the original church building was located on State Street. In 1898 Westminster was chosen as the name of the church. The people dedicated to the glory of God the present building at 349 North Market Boulevard in 1908. For over 150 years despite wars, depression, earthquakes, floods and other disasters, the Westminster congregation has loved and served God through its vibrant and loving ministries to the community and the world.

The present community of faith is composed of a balance of long-term resident families joined with newcomers from all over the country which continues to create vital and life-changing ministries. For example, the Westminster Presbyterian Church (WPC) Preschool has been a steady influence in the community since 1966. Since 1987 the Westminster Bells (handbell choir) have provided annual concerts which are enjoyed by hundreds every Christmas. Since the first WPC missionaries visited Malawi, Africa, in 1998, the church has provided significant resources to support the establishment of the University of Livingstonia and other Malawi mission work.

Valuing mission and ministries, this Body of Christ continually responds to the emerging needs of the community and world through direct support, fellowship and prayer. In December 2007 WPC was one of the first responders and opened the church building to serve as an emergency shelter for flood victims in partnership with the American Red Cross. For more than 20 years, the church has hosted various after-school programs for children and supported the Lewis County Homeless Coalition and the Chehalis Food Bank. We have strengthened our alliance with, and financial support for Love, In the Name of Christ, a local clearinghouse for churches and agencies that provide assistance to those in need. We are grateful that God has provided us the ability and opportunity to continue the tradition of allocating one-third of the overall budget to mission work.

The 225 people that make up today's church are dedicated to growing and to world changing ministries. We work to share the good news of Jesus Christ today and tomorrow by glorifying God and reflecting the love of Jesus to the world through mission and ministries.
